Welcome to Megan Cope Elementary School, Home of the Seahawks!
The 2016-2017 school year is going to be an AWESOME school year! This is my 20th year as an educator, and I can’t imagine a better calling for myself. We are lucky to have a full time Assistant Principal, Amy Rose. Together, we are committed to achieving student success.
Megan Cope Elementary is a place where we celebrate our students’ unique gifts and talents. This year, Cope is becoming an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Elementary School. We believe firmly that all of our students have what it takes to be College Bound. Our staff is comprised of highly qualified teachers who collaborate as a Professional Learning Community on a weekly basis. We ensure the academic and social growth of every child as we prepare our students to be college and career ready. We are a team that prides themselves on providing the 40 Developmental Assets, along with setting high expectations, both academically and behaviorally. Our school site’s focus is to actively engage students in reading, writing, math, social studies and science. Our teachers also provide differentiated instruction within small group guided reading in order to better serve each student’s specific literacy needs. We utilize the Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) to teach students character traits that encourages and models how to be a “successful student.”
In order to prepare our students to be 21st Century Learners, another focus on our campus is to embed the use of technology into our daily teaching instruction. At Cope, we have been acquiring new devices for students to learn and teachers to teach with. In our primary grades, we are using iPads, as well as desktop computers, and even some Chromebox devices. Our 3rd-5th grade students are fortunate to each have a ChromeBook to use during their instructional classroom time. We are striving towards preparing our students to be technology savvy, as well as literate users so that as they progress through their school years, they are capable of navigating and interpreting the technology world with confidence.
We believe that a strong home/school connection is vital to student success. We want our parents to feel welcome at Megan Cope, as well as comfortable coming onto our school site to volunteer or participate in the many different types of events, committees, classroom and field trips that we have throughout the year. This year, we will begin to hold a monthly Principal’s Breakfast for our parents to come and ask questions, provide feedback, and learn about the wonderful curriculum and instruction that is taking place at our school. We also hold weekly Friday Pep Assemblies where we celebrate our student successes and recognize individual students for their hard work and determination. This is a great opportunity for our parents to come onto campus and see the many wonderful things our students and staff are doing throughout the year.
I am looking forward to an amazing school year and am excited for the opportunity to get to know the students and the families of this great community.
